Here is what we do, step by step
Answer and dispatch
A real person answers 24/7, asks where the sewage came up and sends a crew in protective gear.
Contain the area
We set up the work area so sewage residue is not tracked into clean parts of your home.
Remove sewage and materials
We remove the sewage and take out soaked porous materials such as carpet, pad and the wet lower section of drywall.
Clean and disinfect
We clean and disinfect floors, walls, framing and anything that stays.
Dry and document
We dry the structure, confirm it with moisture readings and document each step with photos for your adjuster.
Rebuild and finish
The same team rebuilds what was removed and sends you updates until it is finished.
How does insurance usually handle this?
Triple-I says sewer backups are not covered under a typical homeowners policy unless you added sewer and drain backup coverage, which most insurers offer as an add-on to the policy (called an endorsement) for a modest cost. Those add-ons often carry their own dollar limit, so the amount on your policy matters. Check your own policy and talk to your agent or adjuster about what applies to your loss.
This is general information, not insurance advice. We are glad to walk you through what we see and what to ask your insurer.

Call [TRACKING NUMBER]Questions about sewer backup cleanup
Why do Chicago sewers back up into basements?
Most sewers in the Chicago area carry sewage and storm runoff in the same pipes, according to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD). When rain enters the local sewer faster than it can flow through, the water rises and can push into basements through private sewer drains. Blockages or damage in your own private sewer line can also cause backups.
Is a sewer backup a health risk?
Yes. Sewage falls in the most contaminated category of water damage, called black water, and the CDC warns that water containing sewage can cause illness and infect open wounds. The EPA advises calling a professional when water damage is caused by sewage.
Can I clean up a sewer backup myself?
The EPA recommends calling in a professional when water or mold damage comes from sewage or other contaminated water. Sewage soaks into porous materials and wall cavities that are hard to see, and the cleanup calls for protective gear. If you have to step in before we arrive, wear rubber boots, gloves and goggles, and wash your hands afterward.
What has to be thrown away after a sewer backup?
Non-porous items like metal, plastic and glass can usually be cleaned and disinfected. Porous items soaked with sewage, like carpet, pad, upholstered furniture and wet drywall, often have to be removed. We photograph and list everything that goes so your adjuster has a record before anything leaves the house.
How do I prevent another sewer backup?
Triple-I says a properly installed and maintained backwater valve lets sewage go out but not come back in, and the City of Chicago's emergency management office recommends check valves in sewer traps. Keep grease, wipes and paper towels out of drains. A licensed plumber can inspect your private sewer line for roots or cracks.
Should I call the city when my sewer backs up?
If streets on your block are flooded or catch basins are clogged, report it to 311. The MWRD also advises residents to notify their municipality when flooding happens. The private sewer line that runs from your home to the street is a separate issue a licensed plumber can check.
